The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued an emergency airworthiness directive for 16 Airbus A380 superjumbo jets. This mandate becomes effective June 24, 2026. The directive affects 15 aircraft operated by Emirates. One Qantas aircraft is also included in the mandate.
Inspectors discovered cracks in the wing mid spars, which are critical structural components. EASA warns the condition could reduce the structural integrity of the wings. Airbus is supporting the inspections and will coordinate with EASA to determine if repairs are necessary.
Five Emirates aircraft require immediate inspections before their next scheduled flight. An additional 11 jets require checks within 25 flight cycles.
This issue renews focus on the long-term maintenance of the aging A380 fleet. The model faced similar wing-related structural concerns in 2012.
