Amazon unveiled Project Mercury to significantly expand its same-day delivery service. The company plans to increase its fulfillment centers from 85 to over 1,000 by 2031. This expansion aims to place fulfillment sites within 10 miles of 80% of U.S. Prime subscribers.
The move directly challenges Walmart’s market dominance in groceries and daily essentials. Amazon budgeted $6.8 billion for U.S. same-day delivery capacity during 2026 and 2027. Internal projections suggest Project Mercury could generate $7.1 billion in economic value over a decade.
