Canal+, the new owner of MultiChoice, will phase out the Showmax streaming service. This joint venture with Comcast's NBCUniversal aimed to compete with Netflix and Disney+.
Following a review, Canal+ Group CEO Maxime Saada labeled Showmax "not a commercial success." The venture reported significant trading losses for the year to April 2025.
During this period, the platform lost R650 for every R99 in subscription fees. Subscription growth failed to meet expectations. The review described the business case as ill-considered.
