The Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) board will introduce four new classification categories in June 2026. These updates target potentially addictive game mechanics and in-game spending strategies.
Games featuring paid random items such as loot boxes or card packs will receive a default PEGI 16 rating. This change represents a significant increase for franchises like EA Sports FC, which currently holds a PEGI 3 rating despite its Ultimate Team mode.
Titles featuring time-limited offers or battle passes will be assigned a PEGI 12 rating. Mechanics that pressure players to return daily, such as login streaks, will trigger a PEGI 7 rating.
The reform marks one of the most significant shifts in PEGI's history. The board aims to increase transparency regarding monetization while aligning European standards with Germany's USK rating board.
