Ford Motor Company is recalling approximately 1.4 million F-150 trucks in the U.S. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued the safety announcement for 2015-2017 models.
A software issue within the powertrain control module can cause the transmission to unexpectedly downshift into second gear. This defect increases the risk of a crash. The NHTSA identified the cause as a potential signal loss between the transmission range sensor and the control module.
Ford reported two injuries and one accident potentially linked to the defect. Dealers will update the powertrain control module software for affected owners free of charge.
