General Motors and Samsung SDI have paused their $3.5 billion joint venture battery plant in New Carlisle, Indiana. The Indiana Economic Development Corporation confirmed the project suspension. GM is recalibrating its electric vehicle strategy to address moderating consumer demand.

The project originally targeted mass production for the fall of 2027. The facility planned an annual capacity of 36 gigawatt-hours.

Partners are now discussing options such as switching to lithium iron phosphate battery chemistry. GM is also considering a potential withdrawal from the joint venture. These discussions follow a broader reassessment of the automaker's manufacturing footprint.
