The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) proposed new rules requiring Google to offer search service choices on Android and Chrome. Users would encounter a choice screen during initial device setup or the first use of the browser.
The proposal mandates an annual prompt for users to select their default provider. Google must include rival AI assistants, such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, on these screens alongside traditional search engines.
This move aims to enhance competition as AI-powered services become more prevalent for online searches. The CMA is accepting feedback on the proposals until October 9. A final decision is expected by the end of the year.
