On September 25, Google Cloud announced AlloyDB AI, a new suite of features for its AlloyDB for PostgreSQL database. It includes a fully managed remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that lets autonomous AI agents query live operational data directly and securely, without human intervention. Google is positioning AlloyDB as a pioneering agentic database.

The architecture separates unpredictable AI-agent workloads from a company’s production database. A separate, elastically scalable resource pool handles agent queries, helping prevent performance degradation in the production environment.

The announcement is part of Google’s broader strategy to rebuild its cloud infrastructure for a future dominated by AI agents. It also challenges Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure to develop similar native capabilities.
