A U.S. federal judge dismissed antitrust lawsuits filed in 2025 by education technology company Chegg and publisher Penske Media against Alphabet’s Google. The companies alleged Google required publishers to allow their content in AI-generated search summaries, known as AI Overviews, to remain in search results, reducing traffic to their websites.
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta said the claims “fail to get out of the starting gate.” He reasoned that the companies had only an “expectation” of receiving web traffic from Google, not a formal agreement that could support their antitrust claims.
Mehta said he was not unsympathetic to the economic harm publishers face from new technology. But he concluded that addressing those concerns is a matter for legislators, not antitrust law.
