Google will discontinue Gems, its Gemini feature for creating customized, task-specific chatbots. Starting November 17, 2026, the company will automatically migrate existing Gems to a new system called Skills.

Skills will let users access specialized AI functions directly within a chat through slash commands, instead of opening separate agents. Google says the feature is designed to make the experience faster and more integrated.

The change marks a shift toward streamlined workflows as Google competes with a new wave of all-in-one AI agents. Skills is currently available to Pro and Ultra subscribers. It is unclear whether Google will offer it to free users who currently use Gems.
