Google has agreed to buy approximately 3.6 GW of carbon-free electricity from Constellation Energy to power its data centers. The deal covers the PJM Interconnection, the largest grid in the United States, which serves 13 states, primarily in the Mid-Atlantic. It supports Google’s goal of running on 100% carbon-free energy around the clock.

The deal includes a 20-year agreement to support more than $4.3 billion in upgrades to Constellation’s existing nuclear facilities. The work will upgrade 11 facilities and add 890 MW of capacity to the grid.

Constellation will supply the remaining approximately 2,700 MW from its broader energy fleet under a 15-year agreement. The deal is expected to create thousands of construction jobs and support existing jobs at the nuclear plants.
