Google DeepMind has introduced SynthID Bio, a new technology designed to embed imperceptible watermarks into AI-generated proteins. This initiative aims to enhance biosecurity and scientific integrity by creating a verifiable signature within the biological code of synthetic proteins, distinguishing them from natural ones without compromising their function. The watermark can be verified on the physical protein itself, not just its digital model.
The development of SynthID Bio is a response to the growing capabilities of AI in designing novel proteins, which poses potential security risks, such as bypassing traditional DNA synthesis screening. By watermarking protein sequences and their 3D structures, DeepMind hopes to help researchers track the origin of biological designs and ensure public databases remain unadulterated. The technology was validated in lab tests on three different proteins, where the watermarked versions performed on par with unwatermarked ones.
