NVIDIA is reportedly investing between $5 billion and $10 billion to acquire extensive dark fiber assets across the United States. This infrastructure consists of unused optical cables that will form a private nationwide telecommunications network. The project enables a potential data capacity of up to 7.6 petabits per second.
The move allows NVIDIA to control the full AI computing stack from hardware to data delivery. By owning the physical network, the company can directly connect its GPU clusters and offer AI services to enterprise customers. This strategy reduces reliance on major cloud providers like AWS and Google. It also counters the development of custom AI chips by those same cloud competitors.
