Friends of the Earth initiated a new lawsuit against Shell in the Netherlands. The activist group demands the energy giant immediately cease all investments in new oil and gas projects. This legal action argues that continued fossil fuel investments violate human rights and ignore urgent climate needs.

The case builds upon a 2024 landmark ruling that ordered Shell to reduce its carbon emissions. Activists contend that Shell’s strategy contradicts legal obligations by scaling back renewable operations and increasing liquefied natural gas sales.

Shell labeled the legal action unreasonable because it ignores ongoing global demand for fossil fuels. A hearing date for the new case has not yet been scheduled.
