Tesla is facing an ongoing federal investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regarding the safety of its door handles on Model 3 and Model Y vehicles from model years 2017 to 2022. The probe was initiated in September after numerous complaints alleged that the flush door handles may fail to operate when the car has no power, creating a safety risk. The investigation has reportedly been triggered by incidents where individuals, including children, were allegedly trapped inside vehicles. As part of the inquiry, the NHTSA has mandated that Tesla submit all records concerning door handles, latches, and related software. The company is required to respond to this federal request by December 10.
