Nearly 4,500 Tesla vehicles in South Korea have reportedly experienced battery system malfunctions that prevent charging, leading to consumer backlash and government scrutiny. Over half of the battery replacements were allegedly done with reused batteries instead of new ones, further fueling customer outrage. The Environment Ministry of South Korea has demanded a resolution from Tesla, warning that a failure to address the issue could result in the suspension of government subsidies for the company's electric vehicles. According to data submitted by Tesla Korea to a Democratic Party lawmaker, there have been 4,637 cases of a specific battery management system error since 2017, with some vehicles experiencing the failure multiple times. The majority of these issues, approximately 65%, occurred in 2021 models, with the Model Y and Model 3 being significantly affected. Consumers have been demanding a voluntary recall or free battery replacements, but Tesla has not yet issued a formal response.
