Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced it will mass-produce advanced 3-nanometer chips at its second plant in Kumamoto, Japan. This represents a significant upgrade from previously planned older technologies. The total investment for the facility is now expected to be around $17 billion. The decision responds to surging global demand for chips powering artificial intelligence applications.
CEO C.C. Wei confirmed the plan during a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Wei stated the new fab will form a foundation for Japan's AI business. This facility will be the first in Japan to produce such advanced semiconductors.
The Japanese government welcomed the announcement. It pledged support for the project, which it views as crucial for the nation's economic security.
