AMD acquires Taalas, embedding AI models into silicon to challenge GPUs

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) acquired Taalas, a startup that integrates AI model weights directly into silicon. This acquisition targets the development of efficient AI-specific hardware to challenge traditional GPU architectures. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter. Financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.

The move strengthens AMD’s position within the AI inference market. Taalas technology integrates AI models into the chip to reduce memory bottlenecks and increase processing speeds. This design eliminates the need for power-intensive external High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). Early tests of Taalas’s first chip showed performance gains over current GPUs on large language models.
