Microsoft ended its exclusive cloud rights to OpenAI technology in a major partnership restructuring. The new agreement permits OpenAI to sell models and services directly on competing platforms, including Amazon Web Services (AWS). Amazon CEO Andy Jassy confirmed OpenAI models will launch on AWS within the coming weeks.
Microsoft remains the primary cloud partner and retains intellectual property licenses through 2032. This strategic shift broadens OpenAI’s enterprise reach and establishes a clearer path toward a potential IPO.
The restructuring may reduce antitrust scrutiny regarding Microsoft’s deep ties to the AI leader. This change also provides Microsoft with more capital and flexibility to collaborate with other AI firms.
