A consortium including Meta, Walmart, Stripe and Sierra has announced the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for how personal AI agents interact with businesses. The framework aims to help companies distinguish between humans and AI agents and manage agents’ access to data and services. Sierra co-founder and OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor is leading the effort.
The protocol is designed to give consumers granular control over their agents’ permissions, similar to how OAuth lets users sign in with Google or Facebook accounts. It will handle authentication and give businesses visibility into agent activity.
Partners include Shopify and Genesys, but major AI labs OpenAI and Anthropic have not joined. A preliminary version of the protocol specification is expected later in October 2026.
