Meta Platforms faces a new lawsuit for allegedly using Facebook and Instagram photos to train facial recognition AI without consent. A group of parents and children filed the complaint, claiming Meta used the images for an unreleased system called NameTag.

The lawsuit alleges NameTag was developed for Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses. It further claims Meta’s generative AI systems, Emu and Muse Image, utilized user biometric information for training.

The legal challenge could impact the development and deployment of Meta’s AI-integrated hardware. Separately, Meta’s Oversight Board advised against replacing human fact-checkers with a crowdsourced Community Notes system in Latin America.
